PROVINCIAL INDIGENOUS GAMES LAUNCH

The Eastern Cape Government through the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture will be the first province to launch Indigenous
Games. The launch will take place at Kwa-Bhala Administrative Area in Flagstaff on 19 May 2001. This is a follow up to a National Launch
that was held at Qwaqwa in the Free State province. The Launch is a National initiative which for the first time attempts to provide
Indigenous activities within a community development focus. The initiative evolves as a response to Africas vision of African Renaissance.

Many Indigenous games have already been forgotten while others have been marginalized. These games include uGqaphi, Stick-fighting, Juski,
Iceya, Umrabaraba, uNochele, Arh Gogo, Spin die bottle, Rekker and many others. The youth has been organized from across the province to go
and demonstrate these games as they were trained in provincial workshop in Takastad.

South African Sports Commission aims to revive and promote these Indigenous games to get more South Africans more active, more often. This
is also aimed at unifying the diverse cultures of the people of South Africa through active participation, thus guaranteeing the dignity of
all Citizens.

The day will be proceeded by a traditional function hosted by the Chief of kwa-Bhala and chairperson of the Eastern Cape Congress of
Traditional Leaders (CONTRALESA) Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana, starting at 15H00. Dignitaries include King Mpondombini Sigcau, other Chief from
across the East Griqualand region, Business Fraternity, Ministerial Fraternity. The Eastern Cape MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and
Culture, Ms Nosimo Balindlela will officiate the occasion.
